I think it would have purged successfully if you had been running 2.6.15 at the time of the attempted purge. I think you were running 2.6.16 and debian doesn't like to purge a running kernel. Suggestion would be to comment out the kernel line down toward the bottom of menu.lst for kernel 2.6.16 and reboot the computer and see if you get kernel 2.6.15 up you can do uname -ar to find out or look at the screen as it comes up in the very beginning. Then try that purge again.
