Another way of using both cards is editing your /etc/modprobe.d/sound
and add the following lines:
alias snd-card-0 snd_emu10k1
options snd_emu10k1 index=0
alias snd-card-1 snd_via82xx
options snd_via82xx index=1

It works for me, and I can use both sound devices.
