You can boot from a CF card for example and the create from the
system an gigantic initrd which decompress into a ramdisk.
I have a truck MAN 12x12 (88 tonns) and I have to use Ramdisks
to use my Computers while I am Off-Road...
Oh yes, my mass storage are CF cards of 2 and 4 GByte plus IBM
Microdrives (heavily robust) and Laptop HDD's (they are more
robust then standard HDD's) in conjunction with 3Ware 3w8500-12.
(You can put up to 4 3Ware cards) in your Computer, but it would
require Linux 2.6.
And last not least, you should only install Packages YOU NEED.
On one Computer I have Mozilla and OpenOffice plus fvwm and it
forks fully in 8 languages...
...and the installed system has only 1,1 GByte.
