It depends...
with etch (or sid) you do have the latest and gratest (tm) apps and
kernel...
could be good to support some things
however, sometimes testing und unstable are broken and you have to
manually resolv conflicts to get it working again

a way around it would be to use either the etch installer to install
sarge or use a backported installer (for example from
http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/).
then you should have not problems with hw an have a stable (and not
changing) system.

though if you can spend the bandwith to try i would probably reocmmend
to try to start with a standard sarge netinst cd....
(if you want to have the newer apps later on, you can easily upgrade,
but not downgrade).
