In Linux, SATA disks accessed via libata are only supported by
smartmontools for kernel versions 2.6.15 and above. Try an additional '-d
ata' argument.

I'm running 2.6.16, so the message about 2.6.15 and later seems in error. Did I miss something in the release notes, or do I need to open a bug?

The command *does* work with -d ata, as suggested.

I think you may be misunderstanding the message. AFAIK SATA disks were not supported at all by smartmontools prior to 2.6.15. They are now supported by libata only if you trick smartmontools into thinking its an ATA disk by using the '-d ata' option.
