Since you need the deutsche Umlaute (ja ich lebe hier an der Grenze)
do you have installed the

        xfonts-base-transcoded
        xfonts-scalable-transcoded
        xfonts-75dpi-transcoded
        xfonts-100dpi-transcoded

since they provide the missing fonts to us-ascii...
