aptitude badness and corrupted caches

I'm getting the following errors:

    E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

    E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room
    E: Error occurred while processing empire-hub (NewFileVer1)
    E: Problem with MergeList

    E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to do about it. What is the
"Right Thing" to do when the package list is foobarred like this?
