In cases like this, where you do something and get
different answers, it is always easy to check which
is correct simply by putting in a number and doing
a calculation. Try a=6 and a=9 and a=14 and see
who is right. If you are right, then there is a
defect. If you are wrong, then you just need to slog
through the algebra again.
