Weird cursor problem in X11

Hello list,

I am having a strange problem in X11 that I have not been able to
solve. First, this is on a AMD XP 1800+ on a Giga-Byte motherboard
with a Via chipset and built-in video card. The video card uses the
'savage' driver in Xfree86. The machine is running Sarge.

Both in gdm and after logging into an x session, a copy of the mouse
pointer will 'freeze' in one spot on the screen. I can continue to move
the mouse and see its movement across the screen, but the 'frozen'
cursor stays there, giving me 2 pointers on the screen. Sometimes the
frozen cursor will go away after a couple minutes, other times it stays
for 30 minutes to an hour. And then almost as soon as the 'frozen'
pointer is gone, it will reappear in a different spot on the screen.

Sometimes it is the normal 'pointer' that freezes, sometimes it is the
'text selection' pointer and other times it is the busy/hourglass
pointer.

I have double-checked and triple-checked that my XF86Config-4 file only
has one mouse section in it and it seems to be using the proper driver
and settings. But for the life of me, I can not find the solution to
the problem. Googling hasn't turned up much, either.

The mouse is a Logitech optical mouse with a scroll wheel. I am using
the ImPS/2 protocol for it in X.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for what might be causing this?

TIA,
Jacob
