My problem what recompiling the kernel without having done a
make mrproper
... and/or ...
make-kpkg clean

so, I guess the changes to the .config were not getting reflected in the kernel image.

    Here are the USB parts from the .config for my kernel.  The

    but I have also tried compiling them into the kernel - also with
    no luck.
