aspell segfaults - debian sarge/stable

When try to invoke aspell from the command line I get the following messages:

$ aspell file.txt
spell: Symbol `_ZTVN7acommon6StringE' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking
Segmentation fault

This also happens via popup errror message screens in LyX and other gui's.

I tried removing/reinstalling.. dpkg-reconfigure aspell.. no joy

Would anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?

dpkg -l tells me the installed version is:

0.60.2+20050121-2
