Gnome seems to automount usb drives when inserted. Is there a way to get this functionality outside of the GUI? Like when not running any gui just text vterminals?

The package "usbmount" should do what you want.

Or just make a udev rule to mount it on a pre-deteremined mount point? I haven't used usbmount so not sure which is the easiest approach.
