USB boot hate me

After long time I have a micro PC[*] capable to booting from USB. It boot
from external cdrom[1], from USB key where I have installed Damn Small
Linux[2], from USB key where I have installed Debian Net Install[3], but
not if I install real Debian system onto it.

I have followed **step by step** whose guides:
http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/179
http://feraga.com/node/25

but in any case, when I try to boot I obtain laconic message, it said:
"GRUB". Same result if I try to use LILO instead to GRUB (obviulsly in
this case it don't said GRUB ;-)

Uncertain about my capabilities to install Debian in this way, and after
tried Debian router[4] and hacking over solutions with syslinux and
extlinux[5] without result, I done:

- plug usb cdrom and usb stick
- boot Debian Net Install from cdrom
- install Debian onto /dev/sda with kernel 2.4
- wait
- reboot
- cried in front of laconic GRUB message

if I do:
       $ dd if=/dev/sda of=usbsarge.img
       $ qemu usbsarge.img
it boot correctly!

Questions. Why DSL boot, cdrom boot, but real Debian do not
boot? Which is thin mechanism that I do not understand?
