user-mode-linux stopped working with udev and/or newly distributed um kernel

hello everybody,

i have an usermode-linux setup, that worked correctly until i've
upgraded the user-mode-linux package (now it's 2.6.16).
btw, maybe udev should specifically create some special device for uml
networking?

then, i have mounted the uml disk and copied the new modules to it's
/lib/modules, but i get an error upon uml starting, and the net in uml
is not available.

Netdevice 0 (fe:fd:24:dc:d8:53) : daemon backend (uml_switch version 3)
- unix:/tmp/uml.ctl
daemon_open : control connect failed, errno = 2

my command line is:
/usr/bin/linux ubd0=/var/lib/uml-net/uml.etch.ext3
eth0=daemon,fe:fd:24:dc:d8:53 mem=128M umid=etch con=null con0=fd:0,fd:1
devfs=nomount

any help would be apreciated.
