I filter per second around 5-10 messages regulary and between
30-60 messages under DDoS. never had problems wirh spamd.

Yeah!  -  most people using procmail recipes like

    :0 fw
    |spamassassin

Which kill all resources on a machine under DDoS.
The right way is

    :0 fw
    * < 250000
    |spamc

and a well configured spamd
