well, I think the standard procedure is to change your sources.list,
and your default distibution in apt.conf and then apt-get update &&
apt-get dist-upgrade. but it can be pretty
ugly.

I've done it twice taking sarge all the way up to sid and what I did
was clean up my system first. I apt-get --purge removed any packages I
wasn't using and then used deborphan to clear out the built-up
cruft. My theory was the less I had to upgrade the better. Definitely
back-up well first. In fact, you'd probably be best served to image
the hwole system first so you can start over from scratch if need be. 

Overall, it wasn't too bad. In fact, I don't remember any problems in
my last sarge->sid upgrade. ymmv.

oh yeah, watch out for the X.org 7.0 stuff. review the list archives
from the last couple weeks.
