I've been using Debian for years, and (K)ubuntu for a while now. The conventional wisdom applies here: If you want to get your hands "dirty," Debian's the way to go. If, OTOH, you want your system to "just work," Ubuntu is probably going to make your life easier.
The good news is that it would be tough to go wrong with either choice. Good luck.
