This hit me, too. The previous version of startx would look for
$(HOME)/.xsession as one of its possible configuration/clients files.
That no longer seems to be the case, so you'll need an .xinitrc file.
If you were using .xsession before, try:
$ ln -s .xsession .xinitrc
in your home directory.
