Didn't help here (but I don't have gdm). Unless I include the path to 
/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc it complains about no default file, but if I
do include it I get "FPE: "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc" refcount is 2,
should be 1; fixing"

I have no idea what this means and Google is not enlightening.
