well it depends...
with alsa, depending on in whicht i order i start them it is posible for
2 progs to access the soundcard simutanionsly...

anyway...if your apps support it, use a sound server like jack, esd or
arts and there may be others (if your apps do not support it directly there are wrappers,
otherwise select the coresponding output plugin)
which one you choose depends on your requierements and envireoment
(gnome useses esd, kde arts and jack for example is used by some more
professional audio apps)

(it would help to describe the enviroment, which apps you use, to help
you more specifically)
