I tried nvidia's proprietary driver and had the same problem with my AGP card. Adding the option "NvAGP" "1" to /etc/X11/xorg.conf (I am using Etch) solved the problem. True. But what gets me about nv is that the switch from X->vt<x> is so sloooowwww! With nVidia it is instantaneous. If it weren't for that I would use nv.
