"make oldconfig" fails building 2.6.8

Hi

I am trying to make a new build of 2.6.8 kernel, don't want to lose all my previous configuration ...

roomatthetop:/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.8# make oldconfig
  HOSTCC  scripts/kconfig/mconf.o
scripts/kconfig/mconf.c:91: error: static declaration of 'current_menu' follows non-static declaration
scripts/kconfig/lkc.h:63: error: previous declaration of 'current_menu' was here
make[1]: *** [scripts/kconfig/mconf.o] Error 1
make: *** [oldconfig] Error 2

Any ideas what can cause this? It's been a while since the last build, but I don't see why this should happen ...?
