If you are getting this error with the closed source ATI driver, you might
try changing to the open source one, and seeing how things change.

Jon pointed out that your oops happens within xscreensaver.  When your box
crashes, are you actively working on it?  Or is the screensaver trying to
start?  If you stop the xscreensaver daemon, does the box still crash?

Also, does your X log reveal any errors?
