1) make pgdump_all to a differen partiton
2) stop your pstgresql entirely
3) flush the DiskCache manauly
4) tar the whole /usr/lib/postgresql directory and store
the tarball on a secure partition or pother place
5) use dpkg-repack to make a debian package of the installed
pstgresql version for security. (plus all depending pgsql packages)
6) Save the configs from /etc/postgresql on a secure place

7) upgrade to postgresq l8.1

Now while upgrading postgresql should make correctly pgdum_all

8) configure it
9) start it

If all is working fine: Congratulation

If not, 'apt-get --purge remove postgresql' and the install the
repacked version of it and then unpack the postgresql tarball
