pygopherd security

I'm going to set up pygopherd on my home computer just for fun. After
I get it working I'd like to make it available for my friends to view,
but my ISP's conditions state that any servers have to be password
protected, not open to the general public.

Does pygopherd have anything like .htaccess or another authentication
scheme I can use?

Is pygopherd very secure (safe to run on my main computer)?

Thanks.
