Thanks, Grant. I had looked at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=352274, but read it
to be about the yaird/initramfs fuss, and so decided it didn't pertain,
since I do not use initrd.

Your note sure helps; at least now I won't spend fruitless time trying
to fix the problem.
