I'm going to jump in as well.I've been using Sarge since shortly after its release as stable in June. Previous experience with Woody (3.0) was lackluster, being unable to make it talk to my networking hardware.
My advice is to get Sarge, and go from there - aside from the fact that it seems to be driving you up a wall, it will likely stop being supported as of June.
