Not odd at all. Installing Windows XP is a nightmare - well, to be
fair, the actual "base install" is OK-ish, but dumps you in a very
basic setup with no network, no sound and a 640x480 VGA display. You
then have to install multiple drivers in a specified order with a
reboot between each one. Bleh.

As for the original poster: it sounds like your proposed upgrade to
Sarge is just what the doctor ordered. You'll certainly find the
installation easier than for Woody, by all accounts.

You should certainly find you get rid of the problems with the USB
connection, and may also resolve the web connection and printer
problems without further intervention (though you'll need to select
the "Print server" task as well as "Desktop" during installation if
you want CUPS installed as part of the installation). If you have
problems finding a driver for your printer then you could try
installing gimp-print from Etch, as this includes CUPS drivers for
hundreds of printers.
