I tried with a console login (rather than KDE) and it has the same
problem.  If I just type my passphrase at the bash prompt it all
looks OK, no weird characters.

This problem started when I did the dist-update which installed KDE 3.5.
I am not sure it is related though, since it happens at the console
also.

I suppose that it is possible that I was getting some weird characters
before and now the system is working the way it is supposed to so that
now the weird characters are gone.

This is a bit bizarre.
