Not sure if I can help, but I'm running Etch (kernel 2.6.12-1-686, Gnome 
desktop) and use an older ATI 8500 card, and I initially had resolution 
problems.

The two things I did may or may not help, but:

1) In the BIOS I set the ATI card to be used instead of the onboard 
Intel video - just to make sure.

2) I did a dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg -plow (I assume you would use 
xserver-xfree86).

I selected the vesa driver.

As I remember, there are a couple different resolution selections - one 
to set the optimum for your monitor and one to set the resolutions you 
would like to choose from. Each of the selections are check box types - 
move up or down with arrows and select/deselect with space bar (I 
mention this because that's what yours-truly missed the first time - the 
space bar duh).
