Have a look in the bios, it might be disabled.  Also, some kernels for 
special systems, like a realtime server for machine control, must shut 
this off due to considerations about its effects on the realtime.

People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word
'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's
stupid bounce rules.  I do use spamassassin too. :-)
