If the learning curve isn't to steep for your developers, it would be a wise
move to take a look at a Subversion/CVS, in that case they could stick to
their devloping area, but make changes and make sure that they don't overwrite
others changes by mistake.

A security risk.. I wouldn't call it as such, but a small mistake is made
realy quickly.
