And correcting myself... The log file is of course /var/log/auth.log by default.

Also make sure that the file permissions are correct:
~$ chmod 600 .ssh/authorized_keys

#this is needed if you have not disabled StrictModes in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config
~$ chmod go-w $HOME $HOME/.ssh
