While I'm no expert, some questions come to mind... It's your "work PC."
- Could someone have changed some hardware or bios settings?
- You're not running debian on a virtual machine?
- Have you had a thorough look at all logs in /var/log/? It's amazing
how helpful some of that detail can be. :)
- Did you install, upgrade or change anything that may have precipitated
the problem?
- If you kill all your X sessions, does the system operate normally from
a console?
- Can you ssh into the machine from another box when the slow-down hits
to have a look-see? This has solved problems for me several times.
