ALSA compile problem

Hi i am trying to compile alsa-1.0.10 on sarge 3.1 (r3 i think - its the latest one) because i have a darla24 sound card which its drivers are not included in 1.0.8.

the configure runs ok - its when make goes through i get this error

make -C /lib/modules/2.6.8-2-386/source SUBDIRS=/home/studio/alsa-driver-1.0.10 O=/lib/modules/2.6.8-2-386/build modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.8-2-386/source: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [compile] Error 2

this seems to be the problem:
/lib/modules/2.6.8-2-386/source -> /home/horms/tmp/debian-kernel-test/kernel-image-2.6.8-i386/kernel-image-2.6.8-i386-2.6.8/install-386

any idea why its pointing to this directory? And how do get /lib/modules/2.6.8-2-386/source pointing to the right place?
