The proprietary nvidia drivers display the nvidia logo rather than the checked 
pattern.  I suspect it simply draws an image on the screen before making it 
visible.

Maybe if you set your X startup scripts to immediately darken the display, 
then load a background, then lighten the display again before continuing with 
the rest of the login or session load...
