I'm afraid this didn't really help.  The scanner works fine with the
2.4.26 kernel.  After booting up with either the 2.4.26 kernel or the
2.6.8 kernel less /proc/bus/usb/devices lists the Epson scanner and
gives the VendorID and the ProductID.  I did look at the reference you
provided but it appears to have been written just after the 2.4 kernel
was released and my problem is only with the 2.6.8 kernel.
