Openoffice is available as a few packages from a Debian repository. Solve your
update Sarge problem and this will be mooted. In my experience, the Debian
package is __always__ good enough for beginners. Sometimes, __rarely__, a
scrupple is resolved by going directly to the upstream. But the cost, in
terms of your time and download bandwidth, is very high and rarely worth
paying.
