You're jumping from "we shouldn't be held up by minority distros" to "we shouldn't only support one distro" which I didn't see proposed :)

Failing to build from source is an RC bug, so a package which doesn't compile on a supported architecture can hold up sarge, *even if it's never used by anyone on that architecture*.
