Hi List,
I was wondering if anybody has any opinions on the possibilities of ''cutting''
family videos on debian linux (specifically, I have had a Mac for many years which
I now use only for multimedia applications. In the meantime I have migrated completely
to debian with this one exception. Since my mac is now showing its years, I want to
do this too with my debian system.)

it's always them mac users that like to use "ersatz" as an adjective to describe non-mac software. :)

i can recommend some non-ersatz software for video editing:

MainActor v5
http://www.mainconcept.com/mainactor_v5_linux.shtml
demo deb package of MainActor:

Cinelerra

PiTiVi

Kino

and some articles for you to read:

Linux for Video Production

Professional Video Editing on Linux with Cinelerra

personally i think that imovie is the true ersatz of video editing.
but then, any app with an "i" in front of it usually makes me shudder. :)

hope the above links are helpful
good luck
