This seems to be part of a sort of creeping windozification.  Quite a
lot of apps now default to this mythical Desktop directory (with the
irritating capitalization) -- hardly the place you would want to file
everything or anything-- and a lot of others show only an even more
mythical Home directory which is actually a completely unnecessary and
annoying alias for ~/.  I don't see why there is an urge to hide the
directory structure from the users -- at the very least it imposes a few
extra mouse clicks to open 'filesystem' and then navigate to where you
want to be.

I suppose that is just another grumpy old man response...
