One does not patent an algorithm. One patents an invention that utilizes
the algorithm. I don't find it puzzling that Unisys and IBM came up with
two different inventions that use the LZW algorithm. It is possible that
the two patents interfere, but obviously neither patent owner has seen fit
to do anything about it if they do.

Unless you have evidence that IBM's patent applies to something we
distribute and that there is reason to believe that they are likely to
enforce it against us or our users, I see no reason to be concerned. I
have no doubt that Debian contains hundreds of potential infringements of
IBM patents.
