I guess that depends on what kind of hd it is and what controller it
is connected to. Since you are not specifying, I assume IDE drives
connected to an IDE controller (no RAID controller).
In that case, the kernel will tell you on boot, which you can read
later. For example, for hda:
dmesg | grep hda
or, you can get the same information from:
cat /proc/ide/hda/cache
