MAIL environment variable and GDM

Hi all,

I just noticed (because I now need it) that the MAIL environment
variable is not being set when I log in through GDM. If I ssh in, or
just simply do a su to the same user account, the MAIL variable is set.
But it just doesn't get set when logging in through GDM.

Now with with the maze of config files to look through
(/etc/profile, /etc/bash.bashrc, /etc/login.defs, /etc/pam.conf, /etc/pam.d/*) I've pretty much given up on where to look for GDM.

Also, what's an easy way to globally set PATH. Changing it
in /etc/profile doesn't work anymore. Do I need to change it in
login.defs?

Thanks,

BTW, I'm not on the mailing list so please CC me.

Also this is all on the latest unstable. But I have an older system
that hasn't been upgraded for a few weeks and it's acting the same.
