Once booted, you can get to a console with Ctl+Alt+Fn? where ? = nos 1
to 6. Alt+Fn7 returns you to the GUI.
If you don't want a GUI environment you can uninstall it (suggest you
use aptitude - see the manpages)
Finally, if you uninstall (x|g|k)dm which provide the GUI login screen,
the machine will boot to a command line.
$ startx
will start the GUI
