ClamAV on Sarge

I am making my first foray into running a debian server. I have lots of
experience with FreeBSD servers and Etch on my desktop box.

I know the whole mindset lying behind Sid/Etch/Sarge, but one thing has
me confused, and a bit worried about is Clam's version.

Sarge only gets security updates right? Why is clam at version 0.84,
when there is 0.87 released. Is that not a security update?

I've looked on backports.org and the latest clam is for woody, and its
only 0.85.

Now here is my question. Is there some reliable source for keeping up
with the latest clam version, or will I have to compile it myself? If I
do compile it myself and build a debian package from it, should I submit
it to backports.org? Will they appreciate that or will I be stepping on
someone's toes?

Are there going to be any other packages that I may run into these sorts
of problems with?

Regards,

-John
