Yes, but...

I guess that your /etc/mailname has 'gmail.com' in it?

If so, then your MUA or exim4 probably wants to expand the recipient
name 'root' to fullname root@gmail.com. I.e. it's not sent to 'root',
but to somebody whose email address is root@gmail.com.

What happens if you send mail to root@localhost?

So, tell your MUA or exim4 not to add the domain name into the email
address.

If this happens with cron jobs as well, then it is probably exim4 who
wants to 'correct' the address.

In that case fix the mailname or tell exim4 not to use it.
