hdparm -u 1 -d 1 /dev/dvd

If it complains, configure your next kernel to allow DMA for ATAPI
devices, and try again...

Make DAMN sure you have removed that scsi emulation crap (ide-cd must be the
driver of your cd/dvdrom) and use the ATAPI interface directly (i.e you use
ATA:x,y,z as the cdrecord device specifier).   After you got DMA enabled
using a properly configured kernel, that is.
