No sound in sarge, all devices & drivers present

After my recent upgrade to Sarge, and a 2.6.8-2-38
kernel, I find I can run audio apps OK, but no sound
comes out.

There is also another odd thing -- /dev/dsp seems to
disappear after each reboot, and does not reappear
until the command "modprobe snd-pcm-oss" has been run.

Output of lspci is:

I know the sound on this PC works because I can boot
into Windows and get sound there.

Thanks...
