Indeed, dvdisaster is quite amazing at doing its job. I found some hard to
read CDs among some of what I considered "safe" (and I tried more than one
drive, just to make sure).

Indeed. I took the package from incoming.debian.org when it was still not
in unstable, but I've been running etch (testing). I do think that this is
one of the programs that would merit a backport, if we had to choose
packages.
